Ankle or foot pain is often due to overuse or injury but this pain can also be caused by soft tissue injuries, such as sprains or strains. Our trained Physiotherapists in Guelph at the HPC can assist you in a treatment plan.

Common Foot/Ankle Problems

  • Ankle instability
  • Arthritis
  • Heel Spurs: caused by chronic overuse and stress on the plantar fascia, the plantar fascia ligament, and surrounding foot muscles. This overuse causes inflammation on the heel.  READ MORE
  • Tendonitis
    • Achilles tendinitis
    • Achilles tendon rupture
  • Achilles Tendinopathy: an overuse of the Achilles tendon which also leads to an increased risk of rupture.
  • Fracture
  • Fractures of the Talus, Calcaneus, and First Ray: The talus, calcaneus, and first ray bone structures have fundamental roles in shock absorption. Due to their anatomical role in shock absorption, the risk of fracture can increase following high energy traumas such as car accidents or falling from heights. READ MORE
  • Osteoarthritis: a progressive loss of articular cartilage, which occurs until two bones are exposed to each other. This causes increased friction, which may also lead to erosion of the meniscus and bone spurs.
    • Primary Osteoarthritis: related to increasing age and is quite prevalent in older individuals. In an aging individual, the articular cartilage in the joint space degenerates due to the repetitive use of the joints over many years.
    • Secondary Osteoarthritis: caused by an identifiable disease or condition in individuals of any age. Conditions that can lead to secondary osteoarthritis include abnormal joints at birth, obesity, repeated trauma or surgery to the joint structures, gout, diabetes, or rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Overpronated (Flat) Feet: the foot and ankle roll inwards while taking a step. Overpronation commonly occurs in people with flexible, flat feet. There are many causes of flat feet including obesity, pregnancy, or repetitive contact on hard surfaces that weaken the arch of the foot.
  • Gout
  • Stress Fractures: tiny cracks that form in the bone typically as a result of overuse or repetitive force.
  • Nerve compression
  • Infection
  • Structural alignment
  • Joint inflammation
