HPC Guelph Concussion Recovery Treatment. Physiotherapy overseeing a male hockey player in their sport-specific concussion recovery process

HPC is Guelph's Expert Concussion Recovery Team

The HPC concussion team includes on-site sport medicine doctors who will conduct a thorough medical examination and recommend necessary treatment. They work with the HPC team to help athletes meet their goals and may refer individuals to physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, or naturopathic medicine.

As a leading concussion recovery clinic in Guelph, the Health and Performance Centre is equipped to help individuals, particularly athletes, in their concussion recovery journey. Concussions can present with a range of symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, vision and balance issues, and fatigue or low energy, and our HPC team, made up of skilled sports medicine doctors, chiropractors, massage therapists and physiotherapists, are all trained to assess the individual and determine which body systems are contributing to their concussion symptoms.

Each concussion recovery plan is tailored to the specific needs of the individual, but common elements may include:

  • Manual therapy to treat neck and vestibular system symptoms
  • Balance and vision training exercises
  • Cardiovascular conditioning and sport-specific protocols

After sustaining a concussion, it is important to rest for the first 24-72 hours. However, after this acute stage, it is advisable to begin limited physical activity. Exercise should not provoke symptoms, and individuals usually start with light walking and gradually progress. Research suggests that physical activity can help increase brain chemicals involved in repairing damaged tissue and stimulate the brain to restore its capabilities.
