Volunteering at University of Guelph Wellness Education and Promotion Centre

The Wellness Education and Promotion Centre provides a diverse variety of volunteer opportunities in which dedicated University of Guelph students can become involved in the campus community. Our volunteers are committed to providing outreach programs and services that promote and support students’ health and well-being. If you are interested in joining one (or more!) of our volunteer teams, they are listed below.

Peer Helper Program (PHP)

The Peer Helper Program offers experiential learning opportunities for passionate students to become more involved with on-campus organizations. We have two different Peer Helper teams:

  • As a Peer Wellness Educator your role involves planning and executing team-specific events, facilitating workshops, attending bi-weekly trainings and providing resources to fellow students in support of health and well-being. This program requires weekly a commitment of ten hours.
  • As a Peer Wellness Coach, your role involves supporting students 1-1 to help them accomplish their well-being related goals through the USHINE program, and connecting with students through our larger WeSHINE community. This program requires weekly a commitment of five hours.

Wellness Education and Promotion Centre Volunteer Program

The Wellness Education and Promotion Centre’s volunteers provide support to the large-scale health promotion and wellness education programs that are offered by Student Wellness Services. These may include, but are not limited to flu vaccine clinics, mass STI testing, awareness weeks, event promotion and support. Volunteers sign-up for various events and the corresponding event-specific trainings on an ongoing basis to complete the minimum requirement of seven hours throughout the semester. Gryphons Empowered by Movement Volunteer Program

The Gryphons Empowered by Movement (or GEM) program at the University of Guelph is a collaboration between Student Wellness and the Department of Athletics Fitness & Recreation. This peer-to-peer program is designed to help students with mild to moderate anxiety and depression through the power of physical activity, with the support and accountability provided by their "Buddy", over the course of 8 weeks.

Practicum Opportunities

The Wellness Education and Promotion Centre accepts a limited number of students each semester to complete a practicum placement focusing on a specific area of interest around health and well-being. In the past, practicum students have completed projects on bystander intervention, the on-campus farmers’ market, sexual health education and more! Undergraduate practicum students will have the opportunity to join an issue-based team of interest and take on roles similar to those of our Peer Wellness Educators for a total of ten hours a week. Graduate practicum students (such as those in the MPH program) will have the opportunity to work with WEPC through the summer on a specific project that aligns with their interests and the goals of the unit. Contact your academic program's practicum coordinator to find out if a placement with the Wellness Education and Promotion Centre could fulfill your course requirements!
