Healthy Living in Residence

Residences are high-density living communities. That can make it easier for a communicable disease to make the rounds. Although it is impossible to avoid catching all of the germs that go around, the following are some personal care strategies that will minimize your risk and keep you healthy for your studies and your social life.

Immunization Records

Make sure that all of your immunizations are up to date and carry that immunization record with you. Most students entering university this fall will have had the Hepatitis B vaccine series. If, for some reason, you didn't have it or didn't complete the series, it would be advisable to follow up with your doctor or Public Health Unit to discuss getting immunized. Click here for information on how to retrieve your immunization records.

Vaccinations

There are vaccines available to prevent COVID-19, meningitis, chicken pox and influenza. These vaccines are not required but could be valuable for some people who have a greater risk of communicable diseases because of their health status, individuals who have a chronic illness, or for those who want the added benefit. Consider discussing the benefits of these immunizations with your family doctor, a nurse, or at an immunization clinic of a public health unit. If you need to update your immunizations or you require information about immunizations, Health Services at the University is here to serve you.

Preventing the Spread of Germs

Personal hygiene habits are equally important in preventing disease. Careful and frequent hand washing, especially during cold and flu season, is the one significant thing that you can do to wash away germs. Don't share drinking vessels or cigarettes. Make sure that drinking and eating utensils are washed before reuse. If you become ill, consider other people while you recover. Limit your contact with others if you have a communicable disease. If you are coughing and sneezing, cover your mouth, turn your head and remember frequent and thorough hand washing. For more information and tips, read What To Do If Your Roommate Is Sick
