SHINE: University of Guelph Mental Well-Being Awareness Week

The Mental Well-Being Educational Programming Committee is proud to present Shine: Mental Well-being Awareness Week from November 13 - 19, 2021. Students and staff at the University of Guelph developed this initiative to promote mental wellness and provide students with resources to help support their mental well-being. All of the events during this week are FREE and all students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend.


Saturday, November 13 

10am-2pm: Project Serve: The Donkey Sanctuary - REGISTER

Join us for our third and final Project Serve event of the semester! You will be bussed to the Donkey Sanctuary to help with outdoor property clean-up and wreath making to prepare for the upcoming holiday season. Please make sure to dress appropriately for the weather and bring a filled water bottle. This is an in-person event and all attendees must provide proof of vaccination and complete a COVID-19 screening form.  

Note: This event is at full capacity, if you would like to be placed on a waiting list, please complete the form on the GryphLife event. 


Sunday, November 14

6pm: Rocket League Tournament - REGISTER 

Hosted by Guelph Gryphons Fitness & Recreation

Free for all UofG Students. No NRG Pass Required. Hosted by the Guelph Gryphons Fitness & Recreation.
Location: Gryphon Aquatics Centre, Red Pool
Combines shallow and deep water H.I.I.T. (High Intensity Interval Training) and maximize your time and results. Nervous about navigating the Athletic facilities? Meet at the white benches in the lobby 10 minutes prior to the class and we’ll show you around, then take you to the class! 
 

4-5pm - Scattergories with SAMHI - REGISTER

Take a break from studying and join the Student-Athlete Mental Health Initiative (SAMHI) for a game of Scattergories online! 
Bring out that competitive edge for a chance to win an Uber Eats gift card (1st place: $50, 2nd place: $25, 3rd place: $15). Gryphon Cup points will also be awarded to all student-athletes who participate. All you need is a piece of paper, a pencil, and a good attitude! We hope to see you there! 


5:30-6:30pm - Let's Talk about Grief! A Guide to Grief & Self Compassion - REGISTER

Come join the Psychology Society on Microsoft Teams as we create a safe space to talk about grief and self-compassion. The examples and exercises shared in this presentation will be based on personal experience. Meet and support other grievers in the Guelph community and learn about how you can practice self-compassion while grieving.


Tuesday, November 16


9am & 1:30pm - LivingWorks Start Training - Register 

LivingWorks Start is a groundbreaking new way to learn suicide prevention skills. In an hour or two online, the program teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. When you register, you’ll be invited to attend an introductory meeting at either 9am or 12pm to be introduced to the module. An optional debrief session is scheduled for 4pm to answer questions, provide resources, etc. 

10-11am - Warming the Soul: Grounding & Everyday Mindfulnuss 

Location: JT Powell Room 1146 (by main entrance) 
Feeling like the cold weather is getting to you? Need a little warming up to help you get through the rest of the semester? We have just the thing! At the Warming the Soul event, you will get the chance to meet with some Wellness staff and peers, students, pick up some resources to help you practice wellbeing strategies in your own life, practice a brief guided meditation, and fill up a cup of tea to (literally) warm you up. This event is free to all students and no registration is required. Short, guided meditations will happen at 10:15, 10:30, and 10:45.

12-1:30pm - Wellness Workshop for BIPOC Students

Location: Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre Room 302
Join us for this Wellness Workshop to learn about the supports available through Student Wellness Services and attend an embodied yoga workshop from local anti-racist educator Selam Debs! Exclusive to BIPOC Students, limited space available.

5:30-7pm - Bigger Picture Series Event - Mental Health for Money Makers - Navigating Mental Health for Entrepreneurs -  More Info

The John F. Wood Centre is proud to collaborate with the Wellness Department at the University of Guelph and the Business Development Bank of Canada for our Bigger Picture Series.  

Our keynote speaker, Chris Coulter of The Finish Line Group, has seen firsthand the impact that mental health can have upon the success within your business and your life and how the two are on a constant collision course. 

The keynote will be followed by a discussion with experts from the U of G Wellness Department and the Business Development Bank of Canada to discuss the resources and tangible next steps for those with an entrepreneurial mindset and those working in the business industry. Whether you are your own boss or work in a corporation, this conversation will provide value and insight into why mental health matters in all aspects of our lives. 


6-7pm - OUTline LGBTQ2IA+ Weekly Discussion - REGISTER

The LGBTQ2IA+ Weekly Discussion serves as an opportunity for students to connect virtually and discuss and share lived experiences of being part of the LGBTQ2IA+ communities. At the weekly discussion, we explore different topics related to sexual orientation, gender identity, finding community, pop culture, and more. During SHINE Week, our discussion will focus on mental health. These discussions are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. 


7-8pm - Outline Stories of Challenge in Mental Health - REGISTER

A special edition live episode of the Shine Cast podcast- Stories of Challenge in Mental Health. For this episode, we will bring back former guests of the podcast to check in on where they are now, and have an open discussion about failure- something that we all experience in life. The panel will talk about some of the struggles that they may have been through as well as the ebbs and flows that we all go through when it comes to our mental health. Join us on Microsoft Teams to hear their stories!

11:30am-1:30pm - Labyrinth Drop-In

Location: PCH South Wing
Drop by to learn about and try walking a prayer/meditation labyrinth. Labyrinths are concentric walking paths used by many different cultures, spiritual and secular settings to aid in prayer, reflection, and mental well-being. A chaplain from the Multi-Faith Resource Team will be on hand to help you navigate the experience, hold space for your reflections, and answer any questions you might have. Walking the labyrinth is a self-directed practice, so it can take as long or as short as you choose - but most people take 15 minutes or so for the experience.

The Mental Health Panel is our highlighted event for SHINE Week! This year's panel will includes undergraduate, graduate and OVC students as well as a faculty member from the University who will be sharing their unique experiences with mental health, including resources they found helpful. Join us for a night of important discussion and learning from a variety of perspectives. Following the panel, there will be an opportunity for anonymous Q & A with the audience. As a bonus to the great conversation, attendees will be able to enter our door prize draw - a $50 gift card to a store of your choice!

11am-12pm - Compassion Workshop - REGISTER

Join our Wellness Education Peer Helpers for a brand new peer-led workshop on self-compassion. Self-compassion is a way of experiencing our pain and pleasure in a gentle and non-judgmental way. Learn more about how we can take care of ourselves through lifes ups and downs, hear from others about their experiences, and learn skills to begin making this a life-long habit.

Join Counsellor Evan Callan for a period of rest, slowing down, and listening in to ourselves. This mindfulness drop-in will consist of a an opportunity to meet others and connect with others, followed by some guided mindfulness and meditation. 


6-9pm - Wii & Nintendo Switch Games (EngSoc)

Take a break from studying and join the Engineering Society for an evening of your favourite Nintendo games! Engineering & Non-Engineering students are welcome!

7:30-8:30pm - Your Time to SHINE with Jack.org 

This year for SHINE Week, Jack.org Guelph is opening up our weekly executive meeting to any and all who wish to join and gain a better understanding of what it’s like to be a part of a mental health advocacy group on campus! During the meeting we will be doing our weekly mental health check-ins and discussing our upcoming Jack.org Summit, a weekend-long event promoting mental health and how to advocate for yourself and others. We as a team are extremely excited for this event as we think that it will be an incredible way to continue the important conversation around mental health, and we would love to hear any input from the community leading up to it! Our meeting will take place virtually over Zoom on Thursday November 18th from 7:30-8:30pm and we encourage anyone in the Guelph community who is interested to come out and be a part of the conversation! 8:30-9:30pm - Intro to Music Therapy -  Register TBD

Have a love for music and wellness and want to learn how to combine the two? Come join us and our guest Mary Parkinson from Wellington Music Therapy introduces music therapy as a psychotherapeutic practice. This will be a hands-on interactive workshop with a live demonstration from an expert in the field. Come learn how music can be used to promote your own mental health and wellbeing.

12-1pm - Yin Yoga

Free for all UofG students, No NRG Pass Required. A series of passive stretch postures held for longer durations to elongate connective tissue. This meditative based yoga class will help you improve your flexibility, mobility and circulation. Nervous about navigating the Athletic facilities? Meet at the white benches in the lobby 10 minutes prior to the class and we’ll show you around, then take you to the class!

12-1pm - Mood Routes

Join us for a social walk through the Arboretum! This walking group aims to support your mental and physical health by providing you with an opportunity to take a step back from your responsibilities and stresses, engage with others at a social distance all whilst enjoying the healing effects of nature. Cancelled in the case of inclement weather – check @wellness_uofg on Instagram for updates.

Saturday, November 20


11-am-4pm - Spikeball Tournament - REGISTER

The cost per team is $10 (two players per team) and includes five round robin games that will determine seeding for the single elimination playoff bracket. This Competitive division is for intermediate and advanced Spikeball players. Prizing will be awarded to the top team!

12-2pm - The Body Project - REGISTER

The Body Project is a workshop for female and non-binary identifying students that aims to promote positive body image, reduce body shaming, and encourage folks to accept themselves as they are. Our facilitators are excited to share some empowering messages about the 'Image Ideal' with you all in our online format! Please note, this is a two-part workshop taking place on Saturday, November 20th & Sunday, November 21st from 12pm to 2pm. Participants need to be available for both sessions. 


2-3pm - Walk Through the Arboretum with the Future Vets Club

Hey Future Vets! Feeling like the stresses of midterm season and upcoming finals are getting to you? Drop by for a social walk through the arboretum with fellow FVC members. We want to help support your mental health at such a busy time by giving you the chance to take a step back from your studies and stresses to connect (at a distance) with fellow future vets and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Guelph Arboretum. Hope to see you there!
