SHINE: University of Guelph Mental Well-Being Awareness Week

The Mental Well-Being Educational Programming Committee is proud to present Shine: Mental Well-being Awareness Week from March 21-29, 2022. Students and staff at the University of Guelph developed this initiative to promote mental wellness and provide students with resources to help support their mental well-being. All of the events during this week are FREE and all students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend.

Monday, March 21 

10am: LivingWorks START Training

LivingWorks Start is a groundbreaking new way to learn suicide prevention skills. In an hour or two online, the program teaches trainees to recognize when someone is thinking about suicide and connect them to help and support. When you register, you’ll be invited to attend a virtual introductory meeting at either 10:00am to be introduced to the module, answer questions, provide resources, etc. An additional introductory session will be offered on March 25th.

12 - 1pm: Yoga Strength Class

Hosted by Guelph Gryphons Fitness & Recreation - Free for all UofG Students, No NRG Pass Required

This invigorating class uses a series of postures to help increase stamina, flexibility, and balance. Optimize your vitality with the combination of exertion and relaxation. Learn more.

2 - 2:45pm: Breaking Down Facility Anxiety with Athletics

Hosted by Guelph Gryphons Fitness & Recreation

Let’s face it. The Athletics Centre is big and can be intimidating to navigate on your own. Join us for a peer-led tour to learn what’s included in the base membership you have as a UofG student and find your place in athletics. Between soccer, our walking track, table tennis, and e-sports, there’s something for everyone! No registration is necessary. If you require any specific accommodations or have questions prior to the tour, email elozano@uoguelph.ca.

6 - 7pm: Candlelit Snack Platters and Zentangle Doodles

Take a break from studying and join the Peer Helper Commuter Team virtually for DIY candlelit snack platters and zentangle doodles. It's a great way to meet new people, de-stress and have fun!


Tuesday, March 22 

11am - 12pm: Mindfulness Community of Practice

Register: uoguel.ph/mcpw22 

Practicing mindfulness regularly can help us feel more grounded and learn to be more aware of the every day happenings of our lives. In this Community of practice we will learn about different ways to practice mindfulness, for example breath meditations, informal mindfulness, and mindful movement. We will begin each session with a guided practice and will have time to debrief our experiences. There will also be lots of time for sharing resources and ideas with one another!

Any experience with mindfulness, from complete beginner to regular mindfulness-practicer is welcomed! The session facilitator, Victoria, is a Registered Social Worker and the Mental Wellbeing Facilitator in Student Wellness Services.

12 - 1pm: Mood Routes

Join us for a social walk through the Arboretum! This walking group aims to support your mental and physical health by providing you with an opportunity to take a step back from your responsibilities and stresses, engage with others at a social distance all whilst enjoying the healing effects of nature. Cancelled in the case of inclement weather – check @wellness_uofg on Instagram for updates.

12 - 2pm: Labyrinth Drop-In

Walking a meditation or prayer labyrinth is a great way to nurture spiritual and mental well-being. This practice engages the whole body and creates a space that is rich in quiet, contemplative symbolism. Labyrinths have ancient roots in a variety of traditions and are used in both faith-based and secular settings. Come try walking the labyrinth. An MFRT chaplain will be on hand to guide you and help process your experience.

1:30 - 2:30pm: Failure: The Other F-Word Workshop

In this brief, interactive workshop, we will talk about the other f-word: failure. We will learn about what impacts how we perceive failure, how we react to it, and learn strategies to manage our experiences with failure. Participants will have the opportunity to share failure stories if they would like to.

2 - 3pm: Yoga/Pilates Fusion (Women’s Only)

5:30 - 6:30pm: Self-Compassion Workshop

6 - 8:30pm: Mindful Art Night with Jack.Org

This is an annual event that Jack.org runs at the University of Guelph, as an opportunity for students to showcase their artistic talents while also encouraging the conversation surrounding mental health. Submissions will be welcomed from the general student population, which will be beneficial to students as art is often a form of self-care for many individuals, and will provide students with the opportunity to express themselves and share their talents. In the past, submissions have included paintings, drawings, poems, songs, instrumental performances, and so much more, and have often emphasized the topic of mental health in various ways. This event is intended to be a safe space for students to share their work, as well as a space for students who want to learn more about mental health resources, accessibility, inclusion, and stigma.

Wednesday, March 23 

10:30 - 11:30pm: Self-Compassion Workshop

Join our Wellness Education Peers for a brand new workshop peer-led workshop on self-compassion. Self-compassion is a way of experiencing our pain and pleasure in a gentle and non-judgmental way. Learn more about how we can take care of ourselves through life’s ups and downs, hear from others about their experiences, and learn skills to begin making this a life-long habit.

1:30 - 2:30pm: Managing The Inner Critic Workshop:

In this interactive workshop, we will discuss the inner critic and the ways in which our own inner critic may show up (e.g. impostor syndrome, perfectionism, procrastination, etc.). We will also discuss strategies for managing our inner critic and being more compassionate towards ourselves.

This workshop will be led by Victoria Fritz, Mental Well-bring Facilitator in Student Wellness Services.

2 - 4pm: Rock Climbing Session in the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre

Have you been eyeing the rock wall, but haven't gotten around to trying it? Now's your chance! Athletics is offering a free climbing session, no membership is required! Climbing shoes & harnesses are available for free.

5:30 - 7pm: Panel: Let’s Talk Mental Health (Featured Event)

The Mental Health Panel is our highlighted event for SHINE Week! This semester’s panel on “International Perspectives of Mental Health” will include members from the University who will be sharing their unique experiences with mental health, including resources they found helpful. Join us for a night of important discussion and learning from a variety of perspectives.

Following the panel, there will be an opportunity for anonymous Q & A & round table discussion with the audience.

As a bonus to the great conversation, attendees will be able to enter our door prize draw - a $50 gift card to a store of your choice!


Thursday, March 24 

8:30am: The Shine Cast – Season 3 Episode 3 - LEARN MORE 

A new episode of The Shine Cast is out today! The Shine Cast is a podcast where we’re having conversations with students, staff, and faculty at the University of Guelph around mental health, mental illness, how we cope and how we thrive throughout our journeys. The Shine Cast is produced by the Wellness Education and Promotion Centre and can be found across all major podcast platforms.

10:30am - 12pm: On Being a Grad Student (Grad Students Only)

This workshop is for grad students only (any level)! Being a grad student can be tough. From dealing with rejection and impostor syndrome to managing multiple competing deadlines, it can be difficult to find the joy in being a student. In this interactive workshop, we will discuss some common experiences during grad school (such as impostor syndrome, perfectionism, failure & rejection, etc.) as well as strategies to manage these experiences. There will be time to share stories with like-minded individuals and make new connections.

This workshop will be facilitated by Victoria Fritz, Mental Well-being Facilitator in Student Wellness Services, who is also a current grad student herself (PhD Candidate in FRHD).

1 - 2:20pm: Thriving In Action: Finding Balance

How do we find a balance between being a student, a worker, a friend, a family member? How do we find joy in our many roles? In this Thriving in Action session, we will explore how we can integrate the many facets of our lives together. We will identify habits that help us thrive and learn practical time management strategies to help us build new habits.

3 - 4pm: Smoothie Social

Smoothies are a great way to eat nutritiously when you’re on the go, cramming for exams, or don’t have much of an appetite. They’re also a great way to reduce food waste! Join our Wellness Education Peers for free smoothies and get some ideas for recipes you can make at home. You’ll also be able to talk with our campus Dietitian to answer any questions you might have. *Smoothies available while supplies last

This is event is run in partnership with the Campus Fresh Food Market taking place Thursdays from 1:00-4:00pm in the UC Courtyard.

6 - 8pm: Roller Dance Workshop

Interested in learning a new skill that combines creativity, physical activity, and lots of fun? Join the Cultural Diversity Office for this Roller Dance Workshop led by U of G Alum Christen from Rollerplex Entertainment Centre in Brampton. Learn how to groove and move smoothly on roller skates while jamming to some great tunes. No experience necessary! Roller skate rentals will be provided to those who register by March 17th, 2022 at 11:59pm.

2 - 3pm: Beyond the Books Mental Health Literacy Training

Beyond the Books is a live online training that will first provide participants with general information on the prevalence of mental challenges and illness in our university community. It will then help participants to identify signs of troubling behaviour or distress, and give them skills to engage in a preliminary discussion to determine if referral to a professional is necessary. Participants will also learn how and where to refer appropriately in a compassionate and effective manner.

3:30 - 4:30pm: Stay & Crochet

Hook up with some new friends and learn how to crochet! Crocheting is a great way to de-stress and soothe anxious minds, and a great way to end SHINE Week! We will provide yarn, crochet hooks, and some basic patterns & instructions to get you started on projects like coasters, coffee cozies and bookmarks. If you already know how to crochet (or knit), bring whatever project you have in the works! Our Wellness Educator will also share information about managing stress, caring for your mental health, and resources available for you on campus. *Supplies limited, so registering in advance is recommended.

Tuesday, March 29 

6 - 8pm: Art with Impact: Movies for Mental Health

Movies for Mental Health is a 2-hour virtual workshop that uses the power of film to unite folks in the community, connection, and conversation.

This interactive, online experience will feature an anonymous, chat-based discussion on mental health, the stigma that frequently surrounds mental illness, and media portrayals of mental health issues. Following this will be a live screening of three award-winning short films, therapeutic activities to consciously connect minds and bodies, and a collective exploration of what the work means for us as individuals. The event will culminate in a panel of lived-experience speakers and mental health resources, empowering us to share our own stories and access support available to us in these uncertain times.
