SHINE: University of Guelph Mental Well-Being Awareness Week

The Mental Well-Being Educational Programming Committee is proud to present Shine: Mental Well-being Awareness Week from November 14-18, 2022. Developed by University of Guelph students and staff, this initiative is dedicated to promoting mental wellness and providing students with resources to help support their mental well-being.

All of the events during this week are FREE, and all students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend.

If You Really Knew Me 

Location: Summerlee Science Complex Atrium 

This is a stressful time of year & the CBSSC is here for you! We're posting a board in the SSC Atrium where you can post your anonymous "If You Really Knew Me" statement from Nov 14 to Nov 18. Take a look at the board grow throughout the week, read messages from staff, faculty, & students, & feel connected to the CBS family!  

Monday, November 14  

12-3pm: Button Making and Temporary Tattoos with the Student Support Network 

Location: UC Courtyard 
Buttons and Beauties! Come stop by the UC courtyard to make buttons and pick up some mental-health-themed temporary tattoos with the Student Support Network! You can come and draw your own button designs or use some of ours! Hope to see you there!  

4-5pm: Introduction to Music Therapy Workshop with the Wellington Music Therapy Services

Have a love for music and wellness and want to learn how to combine the two? Come join us as Mary Parkinson from Wellington Music Therapy introduces music therapy as a psychotherapeutic practice. This will be a hands-on interactive workshop with a live demonstration from an expert in the field. Come learn how music can be used to promote your own mental health and well-being. 

4pm: Rec Room Drop-In 

Location: Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, 3202 
The recreation room has table tennis, foosball, air hockey and hammocks- the perfect place to relax & hang out with friends. Open to all U of G students (no NRG membership required) 

6-8pm: Just Craftin’ Around

Join the BioSci Student Association for a night filled with crafts, music, friends, and fun! Join us in creating silly string bracelets, science crafts, and more! Come away from the event with your very own care kit! Make sure to RSVP! 

Tuesday, November 15 

12-1pm: SpiritualiTEA - Paint and Pass it On! with the Multi-Faith Peer Helper Team

Take a study break and stop by the warm and cozy Raithby House for a painting session. We’ll provide all the paint supplies and FREE SNACKS!  
Our event is going to be a group activity. Paint and pass it on, there will be a 10-minute interval of painting, and then you’ll pass your painting on to the next person and contribute to their painting as well. At the end of it you will be able to keep your painting with all the contributions from your peers. 
SpiritualiTEA is a weekly space open to all students of all backgrounds to enjoy tea, coffee, snacks and great conversation. Hosted by Multi-Faith Programs and the Multi-Faith Peer Helper Team, SpiritualiTEA welcomes all who are interested in building community and understanding by sharing our various perspectives.  Each week we'll have a different activity, speaker, or conversation topic. 

2-3pm: Holiday Paint by Numbers 

Location: UC 225 
Cam’s Kids, HanVoice and Psysoc are collaborating to give you a FREE Holiday Themed Paint by Numbers event! Portraits will be of snowmen, reindeers, santa, and the grinch! Limited supplies last.  

3-4pm: Journaling to Boost Body Image & Self-Compassion

Looking to build a journaling practice? The mental health benefits are plentiful, but it can be challenging to keep a regular schedule. During this workshop, you will learn strategies to develop a greater sense of self-compassion and positive body image. 
The workshop is guided by a communications specialist turned eating disorder educator, who has built a life-long practice of journaling and seen the positive impacts it had on her self-image. To wrap up the session, participants will spend time journaling and come back together to reflect on their experiences.  
All attendees will receive a journal & pen to keep! Facilitated by Chloë Grande, Eating Disorder Recovery Speaker and Writer

3-4pm: Women’s Only Swim 

Location: Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, Red Pool 
This swim time is open for any women looking to swim and build community.  Open to all U of G students (no NRG membership required) 

4-5pm: Positive Thoughts Journaling with Mental Health Trivia by EWB-Guelph 

Location: THRN 1002 
Join us for a free journal and a chance to win a mental well-being care package! All who participate will walk away with a better understanding of how to keep positive and take care of their mental health.   

6-7pm: Self-Love & Self-Compassion Prompts with Guelph Poets Society

We, Guelph Poets Society, will be having our bi-weekly meetings on Tuesdays at 6 PM both in-person and virtually! Bring some tea, grab a snack, cozy up with some blankets and most importantly don’t forget to get any poetry you want to share! This week’s theme is Self-Love & Self-Compassion We will always let you know our week's theme, however, feel free to bring any of your favourite pieces. If you don't have poetry, that's ok too! You can cheer on other members and simply be there to enjoy the night! 

Wednesday, November 16 

12–1pm: Movember Mood Routes for Men’s Mental Health

Location: Meet outside of the J.T. Powell Building
Join us for a social walk through the Arboretum! We meet outside the J.T. Powell building every Friday at noon, rain or shine! This walking group aims to support your mental and physical health by providing you with an opportunity to take a step back from your responsibilities and stresses, and engage with others at a social distance all whilst enjoying the healing effects of nature. Being free and non-committal, Mood Routes will allow you to enjoy both the physical and emotional benefits of walking with few barriers. 
The focus on Movember is meant to emphasize the importance of men's mental health, and related initiatives while serving as a safe space for all conversations surrounding the topic. Everyone is welcome! 
Note on inclement weather: In the case of heavy rain, thunder, snow, or hail, Mood Routes may be cancelled. We will make the decision by Friday at 11:00 am. If the event is cancelled, we will update that on GryphLife, as well as on our Instagram story (@wellness_uofg) 

3-4pm: LGBTQ2IA+ Only Swim 

Location: Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, Red Pool 
This swim time is open to folks apart of the LGBTQ2IA+ community to provide a safer, braver space for folks to show up, move their bodies & build community. Any queer, trans and/or gender-diverse person who wants to attend is welcome! We have Women’s, Men’s and Universal change rooms, each with access to the pools & hot tub from the back. If you do not identify as LGBTQ2IA+, we welcome allies who want to attend.

5-6pm: SHINE Week Pot Painting with Future Vets Club

Do you want to add some colour and a pop of green to brighten up your day and de-stress after midterm season? Are you looking for an opportunity to meet other pre-vet students? Look no further than our Pot Painting event! This event will let you create your own unique terracotta pot, allow you to watch your personal plant grow throughout the semester, as well as give you the opportunity to meet other like-minded students!

1-2:30pm: Wholistic Wellness with Elders Dan and Mary Lou Smoke

Gather in a circle with Elders Dan and Mary Lou Smoke to learn about wholistic wellness in the Indigenous community. They will share about the promotion of the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of wholistic wellness grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and being. Everyone is welcome!

4-5pm: Heavy Bag Drop-In

Our Heavy Bag room contains hanging punching bags to channel your stress & anxiety. No guided instruction here- you’re free to train however feels best for your body. Stay for as long or as little as you want. Open to all U of G students (no NRG membership required) 

6pm–8pm: "Inside Out" Movie Night

Calling all students, including off-campus commuters! The Off-campus Peer Helpers are collaborating with the Wellness Education and Promotion Centre to bring you a stress-free movie night as a part of SHINE Week. Bring your friends or make new ones this movie night. 

6-7:30pm: Perfectionism Workshop with CFRU

This workshop provides useful tips to help understand and manage perfectionism, impostor syndrome, and how the inner critic shows up. Participants will be encouraged to discuss and address concerns about their own struggles with perfectionism, or the concerns of others. This workshop will provide practical strategies to help manage perfectionism promote positive well-being. 
As a collaboration between the Wellness Education & Promotion Centre and CFRU, the workshop will also feature a focus on radio and media, and how to avoid judging our creative work in a negative way. 

6-9pm: Art & Soul: Paint Nite w/ Nicole Alexander & Art Show

Join the Guelph Black Student Association and Cultural Diversity for a Paint Nite and express your creativity on canvas! Participants will have the opportunity to paint a picture with step-by-step instructions from artist Nicole Alexander. We will provide all of the materials including a canvas, paint brushes, and acrylic paint, so join us to awaken your inner artist! 
Stay after the workshop for a student art show featuring creations by talented U of G students. Proceeds from this event will be donated to a local charity. While we are prioritizing the voices of Black and racialized students, all students are welcome to join. 

Friday, November 18 

11am-1pm: Labyrinth Meditation Drop-In

Walking the labyrinth is an ancient contemplative practice, found in numerous spiritual and secular traditions. A regular labyrinth practice promotes inner well-being and complements any prayer or meditation practice you might already engage in. 
Whether you are new to labyrinths or not, you are welcome to experience the labyrinth at our weekly labyrinth drop-in. ECM's chaplain - Andrew Hyde - will be on-hand to guide you and to hold space for whatever you may encounter in your practice.

1–2pm: Mindfulness Workshop

Learn some of the basics of how to practice mindfulness, such as breathing techniques and general tips to help monitor your mental and physical well-being! This peer-led workshop from the Wellness Education & Promotion Centre emphasizes flexibility of choice, as we all work together towards a calmer mind. 

3-4pm: International Swim Time 

Location: Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, Red Pool 
This drop-in rec swim is meant for international students to meet other international students through the activity. Bathing suits and equipment are not provided, and students are asked to come with clean bathing attire for pool use only. Free swim lessons will be offered once/month for any non-swimmers looking to gain confidence in the water (see below event). Open to all U of G students (no NRG membership required) 

3-4pm: Swim to Survive 

Location: Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, Red Pool 
Come learn from fellow U of G students the basics of water safety and get an introductory swim lesson. This is aimed at non-swimmers who have a fear of water or no knowledge of water or swim skills. Open to all U of G students (no NRG membership required) 

Saturday, November 19 

1–2pm: The Body Project

The Body Project is a workshop that aims to promote positive body image, reduce body shaming, and encourage folks to accept themselves as they are. Our peer facilitators are excited to share some empowering messages about the 'Image Ideal' and help you learn to love your body just a little bit more. 
This workshop and it's content are inclusive of all genders - all are welcome! This is a two-part virtual workshop. Participants must be able to attend both sessions (Saturday, November 19th and Sunday, November 20th from 1-3pm)
