Celebrating National Volunteer Week 2024

Apr 12th, 2024

National Volunteer Week. The University of Guelph and Student Wellness.

Student Wellness is pleased to celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 14th to 20th. Across campus and each school year, hundreds of student volunteers support valuable programming that benefits all members of our campus community: students, faculty and staff! Thank you to our many volunteers, and a special thank you to Student Experience for supporting the Peer Helper Program!

Student Wellness hosts a number of volunteer opportunities within the JT Powell Building, including supporting the Health & Performance Centre, Student Support Network, Student Accessibility Services, and Wellness Promotion & Education Centre. Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, programs and career paths, and each brings a unique perspective to our team. Students gain practical experience in a wide range of skills, including conducting outreach, content creation, working with physiotherapy patients, 1-to-1 counselling, and more – plus, it's an opportunity to be part of a community of peers and mentors who have a passion for wellness!

Meet Our Volunteers

We asked a few of our volunteers what they got out of their work with Student Wellness. Here's what they had to say!

Jessica, Forward Minds Mental Health Peer Helper (Wellness Education & Promotion Team)

Biological Science + Neuroscience Minor

My advice for future peers is to engage as much as you can with your fellow peers, and ask any questions you have to either the Wellness educators or any of the returning peers! There is a lot of new information to learn and everybody on the Wellness team is so friendly and eager to help, so don't be afraid to reach out for support. As well, the people who volunteer with Wellness are some of the best people ever and you build such an amazing community just by being a Peer on the Wellness team!

EshaNAKED Sexual Wellness Peer Helper (Wellness Education & Promotion Team)

4th Year Arts and Science

One thing I have learned as a Peer Helper is the importance of collaborating with other members of a team to complete a common goal.

2nd Year Biomedical Science

Don't be afraid to put yourself out there! I have only met the kindest and most accepting people through my volunteer experiences. Volunteering is truly one of the best ways to learn and grow as an individual, all while making some of your best friends and mentors along the way.

Troy, Student Support Network Volunteer

3rd Year Sociology

I learned how much getting involved on campus can improve your university experience. I have met so many fantastic people through volunteering with the Student Support Network and it has been a super fulfilling experience that has contributed to my personal development.

Ella, Sexual & Gender-based Violence Peer & Student Support Network Volunteer

3rd Year Psychology

Being a student volunteer makes a bigger impact than you might think. Many students are very thankful for your help. All students can make a difference on campus, so if you’d like to help others, become a volunteer!

Khushi, Health & Performance Centre Volunteer

4th Year Human Kinetics

Volunteering offers practical learning and the joy of making a difference. If you're passionate, dive in! There's a unique fulfilment in helping others.

Mya, Health & Performance Centre Chiropractic Volunteer

4th Year Biomedical Science

I learned how to interact with various patients, and I was also able to implement my theoretical knowledge from the classroom into a clinical setting.

Katherine, Health & Performance Centre Chiropractic Volunteer

3th Year Biomedical Science

It has been such an amazing experience volunteering at HPC. My advice for students thinking about volunteering is to make the most out of every opportunity and to always put your 100% in!

Thank you!

A big thank you to all of our many volunteers at Student Wellness – you are all invaluable members of our team and we are so proud to work with you all!
