Late-Semester Registration | University of Guelph Accessibility Services
This information is for students who are new to Student Accessibility Services in the last few weeks of the semester. The purpose is to help you understand how we can assist. If you require any of the following, you might find it more efficient to seek them out directly from other places on campus:
- Accessing supports from elsewhere in Student Wellness
- Learning strategies to manage stress and anxiety on tests and exams
- Getting help with procrastination, study skills and learning more effectively
- Dropping one or more courses
- Seeking out your program counsellor to defer an exam or final assignment to next semester
If you have a mental health condition, or suspect you have one, it is important to first seek support from a health care professional before registering with Student Accessibility Services. If you're not already connected, start by booking an appointment with a Student Wellness Navigator who can help you figure out the right type of support to meet your needs. Call 519-824-4120 ext. 52131. Appointments are usually available within a day or two.
Follow the medical advice you have been given. Do not use your computer or do schoolwork if you have been advised against it. Call our front desk to book a telephone appointment for some interim support (519-824-4120 ext. 56208). Be sure to tell them you have a concussion and can’t use a computer.
New or Recent Diagnosis
Start by filling out and submitting your initial information. After that, watch your email for an invitation to a registration workshop. Depending on the number of students coming forward, you may have to wait a couple of weeks for an intake appointment. When you meet with your Student Accessibility Services advisor, they will focus on helping you figure out a plan for the most pressing academic concerns. Late in the semester, we have more limited options and may have to focus on interim/temporary accommodations and preparing for next semester.
Examples of some interim accommodations that we may be able to support include:
- Access to our note taking portal
- A small amount of extra time on tests and exams (this must be arranged 14 days in advance of the test/exam, and no later than the last day of class)
- Support for an extension on an assignment. Typically, this is limited to one or two assignments that can reasonably be completed within a week
We may also be able to help with assistive software if you have difficulty using or navigating your computer.
Missed Academic Work
We recognize that it can be overwhelming to be behind in your schoolwork. It is important to understand that this is usually a product of difficult circumstances.
If you have missed a significant amount of learning in a course, the appropriate option is to drop it and take it in a subsequent semester. This will allow you to take full advantage of the learning experience and provide you with the best opportunity for success. Have a look at our page about dropping a course.
Preparing for Your Next Semester
Students who are new to Student Accessibility Services late in the semester will have to wait until the next semester for the following:
- Assessment of a student’s educational background to better understand their learning/disability-related needs
- Coaching on strategies for managing disability-related symptoms in an academic context
- Negotiating alternative scheduling of exams
- Negotiating accommodations for missed participation or group work
- Negotiating test and exam accommodations with instructors
- Providing new accommodations that require 1-on-1 assistance
- Accommodations or services that require additional funding
Exam Centre Deadline
Booking to use the SAS Exam Centre must be done 14 days before the test/exam and no later than November 1 (fall), March 1 (winter) and July 1 (summer). Login to Accessibility Online to book now.
