Late-Semester Registration

Body:

Are you registering with Student Accessibility Services (SAS) late in the semester?

This page explains what support may be available if you are new to SAS and are registering in the final weeks of the current semester.

If you have pressing accommodation and/or academic concerns in the current semester, you may be able to book a late-semester consultation with a SAS Advisor. Please proceed with the SAS registration process by following our step-by-step registration guide [1].

Depending on your situation, other campus services may be better positioned to help with certain concerns, including:

  • Requesting a deferred exam, deferred final assignment, or other academic consideration through your Academic Advisor  [2]
  • Learning strategies to manage stress and anxiety [3] on tests and exams
  • Getting help with procrastination, study skills and learning [4] more effectively
  • Dropping one or more courses [5]

Mental Health

If you have a mental health condition or believe you may be experiencing one, we encourage you to connect with a health care professional as soon as possible. This can help ensure you receive appropriate support and documentation for any accommodation needs.

If you're not already connected, start by booking an appointment with a Student Wellness Navigator [6]. Wellness Navigators act as the first point of contact, and work with you to discuss concerns, identify appropriate services and supports, and help to coordinate a plan. Call 519-824-4120 ext. 52131 to book an appointment to speak to a Navigator.

Appointments are available Monday through Friday, year-round.

Concussions

If you have a concussion and have been advised to limit screen use, SAS can assist with the registration process over the phone. Call our front desk at 519-824-4120 ext. 56208 and let staff know you have a concussion and require assistance completing the application form.

New or Recent Diagnosis

Register with SAS by following our step-by-step registration guide for new students [7], then watch your email for the next steps from our Intake Team. When you meet with your Student Accessibility Services Advisor, they will focus on helping you figure out a plan for the most pressing academic concerns. Late in the semester, we have more limited options and may have to focus on interim/temporary accommodations and preparing for next semester.

Interim Accommodations

Depending on your documentation, timing of registration, and individual circumstances, examples of interim accommodations that may be available include:

  • Access to our peer note-taking program

  • Extra time on tests and exams is only possible for online evaluations after the exam booking deadlines. Any in-person evaluations must be booked in the SAS Exam Centre [8] by the booking deadline (at least 10 BUSINESS DAYS in advance and not later than March 1, July 1, or November 1 as appropriate for the semester).

  • Support for an extension on an assignment. Typically, this is limited to one or two assignments that can reasonably be completed within a week.

Missed Academic Work

We recognize that it can be overwhelming to be behind in your schoolwork. It is important to understand that this is usually a product of difficult circumstances.

If you have missed a significant amount of learning in a course, you may want to consider dropping a course [9] and taking it in a subsequent semester. This will allow you to take full advantage of the learning experience and provide you with the best opportunity for success.

Preparing for Your Next Semester

Some accommodations and supports require additional planning, review, or coordination and may not be available until the following semester. These may include:

  • Assessment of a student’s educational background to better understand their learning/disability-related needs
  • Coaching on strategies for managing disability-related symptoms in an academic context
  • Negotiating alternative scheduling of exams
  • Negotiating accommodations for missed participation or group work
  • Negotiating test and exam accommodations with instructors
  • Providing new accommodations that require 1-on-1 assistance
  • Accommodations or services that require additional funding
