JobStart: Capability Program
JobStart is a community based organisation that has been serving the Greater Toronto Area for over 30 years, providing a comprehensive menu of employment services (free of charge) to both job seekers and employers.
The Capability Program is designed to support individuals who self-identify as having a disability, who are interested in developing employability skills and improve their prospects of gaining and maintaining meaningful employment opportunities. Participants are engaged in 8-weeks of Enhanced Employment Assistance Workshops to develop the skills and knowledge they need to participate fully in the job market.
Over the 8 weeks a Job Developer works with each individual – along with a Job Coach - to identity areas of job interest and outreach to employers to arrange a paid12 week placement. The program is funded by Service Canada and in addition to funding the workshops we are in a position to offer financial incentives (by way of wage subsidy refunds, subsidies to offset costs associated with training, and accommodation expenses where required) to employers.
The Capability Program started in the Spring of 2017 as a pilot program and due to its success it has received additional funding to continue the work. To date JobStart has facilitated 6 workshops and has been successful in securing placements for the majority of graduates. Participants come from a broad spectrum of backgrounds and have included people with physical, invisible, intellectual and mental health challenges. As participants self-identify as having a disability or mental health challenge, there is no requirement for a medical verification to join the program.
The next program begins on Monday March 26, 2018. If there are current graduates who are interested but are not available at that time, we will be running later programs but they should get in touch to express their interest.
