How to Enable Captioning in Zoom

This is a step-by-step guide to enabling closed captioning in Zoom using Streamer. 

Please note you must use Google Chrome for Streamer - it is the only web browser that currently provides sufficient privacy.

1. You only have to do this once:
   1. Login to your profile on the Zoom website
   2. Click on “My Account” in the upper right-hand corner
   3. Click on “Settings” on the left-hand side
   4. In the middle area, under “Meeting” click on the option that says “In Meeting (Advanced)”
   5. Turn on “Closed Captioning” (fourth option down)
   6. Confirm that you want to turn this feature on in the confirmation window.
2. Zoom API Token - At the start of each class:
   1. Open Zoom and start your meeting a couple of minutes early
   2. Click on the “Closed Caption” button in the toolbar
   3. Click on “Copy the API Token”
3. Enable captions
   1. Open the Streamer.centre website using Chrome (a commonly used browser)
   2. Login – user name and password are in the email sent to you from SAS
   3. Go into a “room” – it will be named something like “University_of_Guelph-1”
   4. Click on “streamer settings” (upper right-hand side)
   5. Click on “Zoom Closed Caption”
   6. In the “API URL” field paste the token from step 2 above (CTRL + V) then click “Start”
   7. Turn on microphone in Streamer – lower left corner (will turn from red to green)
   8. Depending on the settings on your computer, you may see a message in your browser asking if you want to allow it to access your microphone. Say yes.

Lecture as you normally would (keep your browser open). Students can turn on or off captions as needed within Zoom. If you want to see your own captions in Zoom, click on the "closed caption" button in the toolbar.

When your class is over, type /clear into the box next to the mic to reset the room in Streamer for the next instructor.
