Emergency contraceptive pills & Immediate pregnancy testing:

Speak with a nurse or doctor on campus for details. 

Substance Use & Addiction:

Student counselling and addiction support (including smoking cessation) can be accessed via referral from a doctor in Health Services. Make an appointment to speak with a nurse or doctor [1] on campus for details.

Mental Health & Stress Management:

Support may be initially provided through the Student Wellness Mental Health Navigators [2], who provide service to students with questions or concerns about their mental health and connect them with the most appropriate resources and service pathways within Student Wellness and beyond. Refer to the list below for self-guided resources available both on campus and virtually. 
  • Stress Less for Tests [3]: This online, on-demand workshop provides 3 hours of information and training in practical strategies to decrease test anxiety while in class, studying, before the exam, and during the exam. Skills development is emphasized, and daily practice is very strongly recommended.   • Relaxation & Stress Management Skills Training Program [4] This group program meets twice a week for 6 weeks (12 sessions in total) to maximize the opportunity to practice and develop strong skills in releasing body tension, and calming and focusing the mind. This educational program emphasizes skill acquisition and education about stress management and high performance. This is not a self-disclosure or therapy group; the purpose is skills practice.

  • Deep Breathing Exercises [6] – Try these exercises, search for others on YouTube, or you can come into counselling for some other ideas.
  • Progressive Muscular Relaxation [7] – This video shows an example of a muscle relaxation technique, which is a process of systematically tightening and relaxing muscle groups in your body. Move from the toes to the head and back down again, while monitoring and regulating breathing.
  • Imagery [8] – Imagine places or times in your life that have been soothing and relaxing, and take time out to just imagine yourself in that place.
  • Free guided meditations [9] to download from the UCLA website 
  • Free guided meditations [10] from Koru mindfulness and other mindfulness information
  • Tara Brach website with meditations [11] that are freely available to download that incorporate other subjects in meditations such as forgiveness, compassion, and love 
  • Loving Kindness Meditation [12]s - Love 2.0 website - a few more options for guided meditations
  • CCI (Centre for Clinical Interventions) Looking After Yourself [13]: Online modules: Procrastination [14], Perfectionism [15]
  • On-campus academic resources – The Digital Learning Commons [16] provides access to resources from the University of Guelph Library and Learning Commons to help you with your learning, writing, and research needs. This includes studying and test taking support, as well as support for procrastination and time management.
    • Also, Math and Stats help – McLaughlin Library, 3rd floor. Science help, Chem and Physics, Science commons, and Tutoring at Guelph [17].
  • Kelly McGonigal - How to Make Stress Your Friend [18] – TED talk
  • Public Speaking – Toastmasters Guelph [19], learn confidence in public speaking in a safe and supportive environment. 
  • AuthenticHappiness.com [20] - take quizzes to see where your stress management levels are, including GRIT testing, optimism, etc.

UofG IMPACT Mental Health Response Team:

The Canadian Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington (CMHA) and the University of Guelph Campus Safety Office will work together to provide supportive mental health crisis care to those in need. The Integrated Mobile Police And Crisis Team (IMPACT) is an example of what is possible when community partners work together to support our community. . Learn more here. [21] 

Diabetes Support:

Students with diabetes can obtain a free container for syringe disposal and return it to Health Services for biomedical waste disposal. For more information, call to speak with someone in Health Services at 519-824-4120 ext. 52131 Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm.
