Registration Process

In order to register for accommodations, you will be asked to complete a New Student Intake Form [1] and to provide documentation [2] of your disability. Once you have made initial contact with us, you'll be assigned an Advisor who will meet with you to review your documentation, talk about what accommodations might be needed, and offer additional support.

What to Bring to Your First Meeting

It is helpful if you can provide documentation of your disability before meeting with your Advisor so that we have time to do a preliminary review before you arrive.  If you have not been able to provide it ahead of time, then please bring it with you.

If the semester has already started, please bring the course outline for each class you are taking.

In most cases it is also helpful to bring your daytimer, agenda, or whatever you are using to track deadlines and assignments.  You may also want to have a notebook or way of keeping track of information we share with you.

How Accommodations are Determined

We review documentation of the functional limitations each student experiences and tailor the accommodations to the individual's needs.  This means two people with the same diagnosis might have different accommodations because of the unique aspects of their circumstances and the courses they are taking.  Our mandate is to remove barriers to equitable participation while ensuring students are not given an unfair advantage - this is a delicate balance.  

In some cases the essential requirements of a course or program are not reasonable for a student with a particular disability, in which case we will work collaboratively with you and the academic department to come up with appropriate alternative options.

Implications for Tests and Exams

Before you are able to book a test or exam with the Exam Centre, your accommodations need to be setup through your Advisor.  When it is your first time registering with SAS, it can take a little bit of time to work out all of the details.  It is therefore in your best interest to start the process by setting up an appointment with your Advisor as early as possible.
