As winter settles over Ontario, icy sidewalks and snow-covered pathways become part of daily life. While picturesque, these conditions significantly increase the risk of slips and falls, which can lead to sprains, fractures, and other injuries. At the Health and Performance Centre, we want to help you stay safe and active throughout the season.

Choose the Right Footwear

Invest in boots with non-slip soles and good traction. Footwear designed for winter conditions can make a big difference when navigating icy walkways. Avoid smooth-soled shoes, which increase the likelihood of slipping.

Take Smaller Steps and Slow Down

Rushing across icy ground is a recipe for falls. Shorter, deliberate steps help maintain balance. Allow extra time to get to class, work, or appointments so you don’t feel pressured to move quickly.

Use Handrails and Cleared Paths

Whenever possible, stick to salted or sanded walkways and use handrails for support. Even if a path looks clear, black ice can be invisible and dangerous.

Keep Your Hands Free

Carrying heavy bags or keeping your hands in your pockets reduces your ability to react if you slip. Use backpacks to keep your hands available for balance.

Physiotherapy Can Help

Beyond these practical tips, physiotherapy plays an important role in fall prevention. Strengthening exercises improve muscle support around joints, while balance training enhances stability on uneven surfaces. At the Health and Performance Centre, our physiotherapists can design individualized programs to help you build resilience against slips and falls. For those recovering from a fall-related injury, physiotherapy also supports safe and effective rehabilitation, helping you return to your daily activities with confidence.

Stay Proactive

Winter hazards are unavoidable, but with preparation and awareness, you can reduce your risk. If you’re concerned about your balance, strength, or recovery from an injury, consider booking an assessment with our team. Together, we can keep you moving safely this winter.
