Suicide Prevention Day Training & Prevention Resources for UofG Students

Training & Prevention Resources for UofG Students

World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to increase your awareness and understanding about suicide. The day brings attention to the issue, reduces stigma, and raises awareness among organizations, governments, and the public, giving the message that suicide can be prevented. It is a reminder that suicide is not the only option, and that there is reason for hope and to seek support. Suicide prevention should be a priority, particularly where availability and access to mental health support is low.

Suicide impacts all people, regardless of age, gender, and background.

More than 10 Canadians die by suicide every day.

For every person lost, many more experience thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts.

  • Higher risk populations include men, people serving federal sentences, survivors of suicide loss or suicide attempt, First Nation, Métis, and Inuit communities.
  • Women have higher rates of self-harm (a risk for suicide), and LGBTQ+ youth have more frequent thoughts of suicide and suicide-related behaviours.
