Partners & Collaborators

SAS will collaborate with course instructors to find appropriate accommodation solutions that meet students’ needs while protecting the integrity of the course.

When an instructor is approached by a student

SAS encourages students to self-advocate. For this reason, students may approach a faculty member directly to ask for an academic accommodation.

  • Faculty members are not expected to render a decision on the spot.
  • Instructors can contact SAS to confirm details about the accommodations recommended, and/or consider other possible solutions.
  • We encourage students to copy their SAS advisor on emails so we can clarify and lend support as needed.

When an instructor is approached by SAS

Faculty members

  • are the experts in their courses and programs
  • must weigh a variety of factors when deciding how to accommodate a student’s disability-related needs

SAS advisors

  • make requests and suggestions for academic accommodations
  • provide information about the student’s functional abilities
  • verify that the disability exists for which accommodations are required under existing

legislation and policies

  • provide information about how other faculty members have responded to similar requests
  • describe the logistics of how specific types of accommodations might work
  • explain the procedures and safeguards we put into place to protect academic integrity
  • discuss the standards that determine the limits of academic accommodations

SAS advisors and faculty members collaborate to

  • problem solve what accommodation is the most appropriate for a given student and the given assignment
