Welcome to the Wellness by Design blog!

You may be wondering, what exactly is Wellness By Design, and why is it important to us in Student Wellness?

Wellness by Design takes a human-centered approach to solving problems and designing services.  We feel this is important, as we want to place the needs of our students who are experiencing a problem at the core of the solution.

The aim of this project is to help Student Wellness fully understand the needs and service experiences of our students and clients so that we can generate new ideas to meet those needs, and then implement innovative and practical solutions.

Why the need for a redesign of our services?

The 2016-2017 academic year was a difficult one for our community. The mental health of students on our campus continues to be a growing concern.

We experienced numerous student deaths, several of them by suicide.  We were also experiencing a record number of students seeking service with increasingly complex problems and concerns.  Staff were feeling stressed and tired as we worked tirelessly to try to meet the needs of the U of G community.  We were also moving ahead with the J.T. Powell addition and renovation in an effort to bring most of the Student Wellness services under roof.

All of these factors combined created the perfect storm - and the perfect opportunity - to look at how Student Wellness Services provides support to U of G students, including mental health services.  We believe there is a great opportunity to use the voices and experiences of our students themselves in designing our services.

Looking forward

We look forward to sharing our progress with you as we work toward designing and creating the best wellness supports and services for our students and the greater U of G community.
