Mumps Notice and Info

Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health has confirmed 3 recent cases of mumps in the Guelph area.  Mumps cases have been on the rise in Ontario in the last few months.  

How is Mumps spread?

Mumps is spread through direct contact with droplets from an infected person (kissing, sharing drinks) as well as indirectly from contaminated surfaces.  Many cases are in the 18-35 year age groups. 

Am I at risk for Mumps?

Mumps vaccination helps protect against infection but not everyone is fully immunized.  Check your immunization records to make sure you have had 2 MMR vaccinations (must be given after 1st birthday). 

What are the symptoms of Mumps?

Fever, swelling, and tenderness of salivary glands, pain when chewing or swallowing, loss of appetite, fatigue. If you are diagnosed with Mumps, you would need to be isolated for 5 days to prevent further transmission of the disease.
