Mental Well-Being Awareness Week calendar

The 1 in 5 Committee is proud to present Mental Well-being Awareness Week from November 4 to November 10. Students and staff at the University of Guelph developed this initiative to promote mental wellness and provide students with resources to help support their mental well-being. All of the events during this week are FREE and all students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend. For a complete list of events, see below:

Sunday Night Cinema - Sunday, November 4, 4:30 pm & 9:00 pm, THRN 1200

The movie is “Inside Out”! Come out at 4:30 pm or 9 pm for a free movie and free popcorn!

T-Shirt Distribution - Monday, November 5, 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm, Raithby Porch

The Wellness Education Centre will be handing out FREE 1 in 5 t-shirts from 12-2 pm. Come grab one and show your support for mental well-being.

Beyond Territorial Acknowledgement - Monday, November 5, 1:00 - 2:30 pm, Aboriginal Resource Centre

This event is developed by the Aboriginal Resource as part of Treaties Recognition Week and facilitated by visiting Elder Jan Sherman. Territorial acknowledgements have the potential to simply become words with little integrity unless supported by relationship building and intentional action. Jan will engage you in exploring what this means, and how to move beyond territorial acknowledgements based on traditional teachings about the land.

Fitness and Yoga Class - Monday, November 5, 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm, Peter Clark Hall

De-stress with a fitness workout, and then cool down with yoga and meditation at this free class from 6:30-7:30 pm!

UC Courtyard Fair - Tuesday, November 6, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, UC Courtyard

Come out and learn about all the resources available to support you on campus from 10 am-4 pm! Campus partners will be there with fun, interactive displays.

How to Help a Friend Workshop -Tuesday, November 6,  1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, UC 430

Wondering how to help a friend who is struggling with mental health? This workshop from 1-2 pm will help teach you how best to support them. Free refreshments!

Perfectionism and Procrastination Workshop - Tuesday, November 6, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, LIB 384

Do you struggle with procrastinating schoolwork or refusing to hand things in until they’re perfect? This library workshop from 1-2 pm will help you manage those tendencies and become a more effective student. Registration on lib.uoguelph.ca required.

Drumming Workshop - Tuesday, November 6, 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm, PCH

This is a guided drumming class using plastic buckets and sticks! Run by Art Not Shame, this event does not require any experience – just come have fun from 5:00-6:30 pm! Free refreshments! Registration on GryphLife required.

Meditate to Regenerate Workshop - Wednesday, November 7, 10:00 am - 11:00 am, UC 442

Calm your mind at a relaxing meditation workshop from 10-11 am. Free refreshments!

Mindful Drawing with the Zentangle Method® Workshop - Wednesday, November 7, 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm, ROZH 106

Take a study break! Come try out guided mindful drawing at this unique workshop from 1:30-3 pm. Run by Certified Zentangle ® Teacher, Barb Robbins, this workshop does not require any art experience – all are welcome! Free refreshments!

“Let’s Talk Mental Health” Panel - Wednesday, November 7, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm, MACN 105

A panel of U of G staff and students will be here from 5:30-7 pm to share their own experiences with mental health challenges. Don’t forget to wear your 1 in 5 t-shirt all day in support! 

iChats - Thursday, November 7, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, UC 535

Are you an international student? Come out to meet fellow international students from 12-1 pm and chat about what mental wellness means to you. This event is developed by the Office of Intercultural Affairs and facilitated by Student Wellness Services.

Cooking Class with Lindzie O’Reilly - Thursday, November 8, 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, MINS 214)

Sign up to try a $3 cooking class from 5-7 pm with our campus dietician! Learn a new, healthy recipe you can use at home. Registration on GryphLife required.

CampOUT with OUTline - Thursday, November 8 (see below for details)

Run by OUTline, this is a fun, social space to meet fellow LGBTQ2IA+ students and their allies. This week’s activities will have a mental well-being theme! To find out the confidential time and location of this meeting, email the CampOUT facilitator at campout@uoguelph.ca

Writing for Wellness Workshop - Friday, November 9, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, UC 442

How can writing help you de-stress? Learn more about how expressive writing and creative writing can benefit your mental wellness, by trying out different writing exercises and journaling strategies from 12-1 pm. Free refreshments!

Perfectionism and Procrastination Workshop - Friday, November 9, 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm, LIB 384

Faith Fridays - Friday, November 9, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm, Raithby 100

Come out to this open discussion on how mental wellness, faith, religion, and spirituality are linked, from 1-2 pm. Everyone is welcome, from all faith or non-faith backgrounds!

Body Project - Friday, November 9, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm (register for location)

This workshop from 2:30-4:30 pm aims to promote positive body image, reduce body shaming and encourage women to accept themselves. To find out the location and to register, go on GryphLife (https://gryphlife.uoguelph.ca)
